Flora Rhino 1600 / 2500 Single-Pass Corrugated Board Printer

The Rhino 1600 / 2500 is a single-pass industrial inkjet press for direct digital printing on corrugated board 1.5 – 15 mm thick. The range covers three configurations: the Rhino 2500 for sheets up to 2500 mm feed width, and the Rhino 1600 in the A version, with water-based pigment ink and natural drying, and the U version, with eco UV ink cured by high-power UV LED lamps.

Because the heads span the sheet rather than traversing it, output is governed by the resolution chosen. Industrial piezo drop-on-demand heads resolve up to 600 × 1200 dpi, and the Rhino 2500 and 1600-A run at 120, 80, 60 and 40 m/min at 600 × 400, 600 × 600, 600 × 800 and 600 × 1200 dpi respectively. The 1600-U runs at 60 m/min at 600 × 600 dpi and 30 m/min at 600 × 1200 dpi. Multi-level greyscale printing at 600 × 1200 dpi gives the saturation needed on brown kraft.

The ink system uses dual-negative-pressure recirculation at high flow, which keeps ink moving behind the nozzles instead of standing still between sheets, and ink thermostatting holds drop size steady over a shift. Nozzle cleaning and moistening are automatic. Automatic dedusting is the other mechanism that matters in this application: corrugated board sheds fibre lint, and lint on the nozzle plate is the usual cause of blocked nozzles. Front-edge feed keeps manual handling of the sheet to a minimum, and job changes are made without stopping the line.

Print width is configurable between 645 and 1290 mm as standard, with 1610 mm available as an option, on sheets 400 – 1500 mm long or up to 4000 mm with the optional support. Data reaches the press over optical fibre and the RIP is Photoprint, with the system open to third-party RIP software. Supply is three-phase AC 380 – 400 V at 40 A and 20 kW, rising to 30 kW on the 1600-U, with dry compressed air at 6 – 8 bar in a room held at 24 – 28 °C and 50 – 70% relative humidity.

The press suits corrugated packaging plants that need continuous 24/7 output but also take small personalised runs, where changing from one job to the next has to happen without a plate change and without stopping.
